National
Endowment for the Arts

This
year, the National Endowment for the Arts marks its 40th anniversary
of leadership in the arts. The NEA is a public agency dedicated
to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established;
bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership
in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent
agency of the federal government, the Arts Endowment is the
largest national funder of the arts, bringing great art to
all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities, and military
bases.

Idaho
Commission on the Arts

The
Idaho Commission on the Arts
is the official state agency for the support and development
of the arts in Idaho. The Commission promotes artistic excellence,
education in the arts, access to the arts for all and community
investment in the arts. Its professional staff administers
and develops the programs and services of the agency, assists
grant applicants, and provides technical assistance.
Bestowing
on the arts their importance is, of necessity, a community
effort, and in 1966 the elected representatives of our statewide
community established the Idaho Commission on the Arts to
stimulate and encourage throughout the state the study and
presentation of the arts, and public interest and participation
therein...and to encourage and assist freedom of artistic
expression essential to the well-being of the arts. Commissioners,
each appointed with regional considerations by the governor,
began setting overall policies. The first state appropriation
was made the following year, and three years later the Commission
received its first grant in support of arts programs from
the National Endowment for the Arts.

Aikido
is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1983-69).
On a purely physical level it is an art involving some throws
and joint locks. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking
opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control
of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static
art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics
of movement.
Upon
closer examination, practitioners will find from Aikido what
they are looking for, whether it is applicable self-defense
technique, spiritual enlightenment, physical health or peace
of mind. Ueshiba emphasized the moral and spiritual aspects
of this art, placing great weight on the development of harmony
and peace. "The Way of Harmony of the Spirit" is
one way that "Aikido" may be translated into English.
This is still true of Aikido today, although different styles
emphasize the more spiritual aspects to greater or lesser
degrees. Although the idea of a martial discipline striving
for peace and harmony may seem paradoxical, it is the most
basic tenet of the art.
Founded
in March of 2001 by AlejAndro Anastasio, 3 Shapes Aikido is
located in Boises North End Community. Our Mission Statement
is Building a World Class Dojo Through Personal Growth
in the Art of Aikido, Family Participation, and Community
Involvement. Our goal is personal growth through the art of
Aikido. We offer classes for 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, 13-18, and adults.
As
a family and community based dojo--- martial art school, we
focus on family participation and community involvement. Our
school has hosted some of the greatest Aikidoists in the country
here in Boise to help spread Aikido. We support our community
with art shows, theater presentations, a clothing drive, and
open mic nights open to the public. Classical guitar, didgeridoo,
Native American flute and theremin concerts for the support
of the arts. We also have hosted a number of Dharma, Zen,
Yoga, and Meditation retreats.

Boise
Community Radio

The
Boise Community Radio Project (BCRP), a group of local volunteers,
believes that it is vitally important for residents of the
Treasure Valley to have access to a more democratic form of
radio programmingone that better reflects the character
of our community. We are currently without a radio alternative
that is responsive to community concerns, emphasizing locally
programmed content.
BCRP
will provide listeners with a delicious variety of music,
while engendering true representation in the discussion of
local issues. Programming will be a result of choices made
by and for members of our community. By giving residents of
our area a public voice, BCRP seeks to reincorporate citizen
advocacy and community interest in the civic decision-making
process.
